Manchester United strengthened their push for Champions League qualification with a convincing 3-1 victory over Aston Villa at Old Trafford on Sunday.
The contest was largely uneventful in the first half, with both teams struggling to create clear chances.
However, the game burst into life shortly after the break when United captain Bruno Fernandes delivered a perfectly whipped corner that was flicked home by Casemiro in the 53rd minute. The Brazilian midfielder’s header looped over goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez and bounced in off the far post.
Villa responded 11 minutes later when Ross Barkley, making his first Premier League start in over a year, fired a quick shot past the United defence to level the score.
But the hosts regained control as Fernandes continued to dictate the tempo. His incisive through ball in the 71st minute sent Matheus Cunha racing behind the Villa defence, and the forward finished calmly into the far corner to restore United’s lead.
Substitute Benjamin Šeško sealed the result 10 minutes later. The striker turned inside the box and saw his effort deflect beyond Martínez, giving United breathing space in the closing stages.
The victory keeps United firmly in third place and extends the team’s impressive home form under interim manager Michael Carrick.
For Villa, the defeat marks a worrying dip in form, with their hopes of securing a top-four finish becoming increasingly uncertain as the season enters its decisive phase.
